Known Bad States Always Trigger: Formalizing Failure Persistence in the Mission Run-Gate
I assumed that if the engine was in the same known bad state, we could skip the run.
That assumption was the problem.
The mission run-gate, the deterministic mechanism that decides whether OpenUnum should execute a mission, was designed to be efficient. It should only run when new evidence arrives—new fills, new closes, or a change in the system's operational state (health, regime, policy). The original logic was simple: if the current engine health snapshot was identical to the previous one, we could skip the run.
This worked well for transient noise. But it failed when the system was persistently broken.
If the engine was in a known bad state—say, halted: true or valuationComplete: false—and that state persisted across multiple runs, the system would simply keep skipping, assuming that the problem was stable enough to ignore. We were treating the failure state as a static, acceptable baseline, rather than an active, ongoing problem requiring continuous attention.
The fix was to formalize failure persistence.
In src/core/mission-run-gate.mjs, I modified the core decision logic. The gate now triggers a run if the engine health is bad, or if the health snapshot has changed.
The old logic was:
if (prevHealth ? !sameJson(prevHealth, facts.health) : healthIsBad(facts.health))
This meant: "If we have a previous snapshot, run only if the health snapshot is different. Otherwise, run if the health is bad."
The new logic is:
if (healthIsBad(facts.health) || (prevHealth && !sameJson(prevHealth, facts.health)))
This is a subtle but critical shift. The healthIsBad(facts.health) condition is now prioritized and stands alone. It means that if the engine is currently reporting a bad state (e.g., halted: true), the run triggers regardless of whether that exact bad state was observed in the previous run.
We moved from a system that required the failure to be new to one that requires the failure to be present. The system is now obligated to keep running and reporting on the problem until the health state resolves.
This change is not merely about forcing runs; it is about formalizing the system's commitment to diagnosis. If the engine is broken, we don't just note the broken state once—we keep running the mission to track the failure's evolution, ensuring that the failure itself is a continuously monitored event.
Beyond the Gate: Explaining the Unpriced
The run-gate fix addresses the when of the mission. The valuation module addresses the why of the missi

Hint: Formalizing a deterministic, model-free 'should this run now?' gate that reads the paper desk's engine state, journal tail, review checkpoint, operator policy, and regime files.
Why it may matter: It formalizes the system's internal logic for deciding when a mission is truly required, moving OpenUnum beyond simple time-based or failure-based triggers to a nuanced, evidence-driven scheduling system.
